1. Why register ABSOLUTLY FREE OF CHARGE as a Lingoo Host Family?

• By becoming a Host Family, you'll be helping to meet an ever-increasing demand!
Learning a foreign language is an essential skill for any young person's future and the best way to learn is by going and practising in the country where the language is spoken. Every parent knows that. But finding a family-based language study holiday that guarantees a warm welcome, is reasonably priced and easy to organise is another matter altogether! By becoming a Host Family, you'll be helping to meet an ever-increasing demand!

• By becoming a Host Family, you can experience the pleasure of offering hospitality and open your family's minds to the wider world.

Welcoming a young person from another culture is an experience that everyone in the family will benefit from: an opportunity to find more out about the world, the enjoyment of sharing new ideas, the chance to understand another person's values and so much more. By becoming a Host Family, you can experience the pleasure of offering hospitality and open your family's minds to the wider world.

• No middleman to work through!

Family life can be pretty complicated when both parents work. By becoming a Host Family, you can supplement your income in a way that's enjoyable and fits perfectly into family life. And because there's no middleman to work through, you choose your own guests and manage your own dates, terms and prices.

2. The Host Family and their guests

• Who are Host Families?
Some Host Families are traditional families (mother-father-children). But there are also single-parent families, retired couples and people who live alone (mostly women). The only essential requirement is that there should be one competent adult in the home.

• Who are the young people you'll be welcoming into your home?
You choose your guests yourself and you have all the information you need to make your choice.
Your guests will be children from other countries who want to practise the language you speak and find out more about your culture. They may speak your language well already or they may barely know a few words; whatever their level of language, they all want to learn and find out more about your culture, in your family and your environment. You might want to host young children who have just started learning a foreign language in primary school. But we would only recommend that if you have a very sociable child of the same age yourself and you have plenty of time available. Otherwise, you might be better to welcome older children who are more independent.

• What is the role of a Host Family?
Integration and communication are the key ingredients of a successful language home stay. Host Families should welcome their young guest like a member of the family and communicate with them frequently in the target language. The Host Family should make sure they always speak in the target language when they are with the child they are hosting in their home. They must do all they can to make sure the language study holiday is a success, helping the child staying in their home adapt to a new lifestyle and doing their most to make the child's stay enjoyable and beneficial.

On a material level, the Host Family provides food and accommodation and shares their everyday activities with their guest (meals, family life, family outings and so on).
All kinds of options are possible: half or full board, meeting your guest on arrival or not, single or shared rooms, organising outings and leisure activities, help with organising language courses, and so on.

You decide on your own terms and prices and include them on your offer. You can change your offer whenever you wish, and as often as you choose. Your prices, as well as the specific services you have agreed to provide for the duration of the stay will have to be precisely communicated to the parents of your future guest. These prices and services, together with all other engagements, will be set out in a Paid Language Study Holiday Agreement form which you will complete and sign together with your partner family before the reservation.

• How long does a language home stay last?
Stays vary considerably in length, and depending on circumstances can last anything from a week to a year.
- Short language home stays generally take place during the school holidays. (Careful: different countries may take their holidays at different times!) This is the best option for younger children.
- Long-term language home stays (a term, half a year or even a whole school year) are becoming more and more popular. These are more suited to older students. A long stay requires greater commitment from everyone involved. It also means a lot of sorting out in terms of schooling and will involve the student being enrolled in the host country's education system. The young person will attend school and take an active part in all lessons, just like any other pupil.

Whatever type of child you welcome into your home
and however long they are staying with you,
INTEGRATION, ATTENTION AND COMMUNICATION
are the essential ingredients of any successful language study holiday or stay.
